Non-Vaccine preventable diseases
Unfortunately not all travel related illnesses can be prevented with vaccination. Some common examples of preventable, travel related, diseases that there are currently no UK licenced vaccinations for include:
- Chikungunya https://travelhealthpro.org.uk/factsheet/27/chikungunya
- Ebola https://www.nhsinform.scot/illnesses-and-conditions/infections-and-poisoning/ebola-virus-disease/
- Lyme Disease https://travelhealthpro.org.uk/factsheet/48/diseases-transmitted-by-insects-and-ticks-in-europe
- Zika Virus https://travelhealthpro.org.uk/disease/196/zika-virus
- Schistosomiasis https://travelhealthpro.org.uk/factsheet/28/schistosomiasis
Customers should be signposted to the pharmacist or their GP but generalised advice you can give includes:
- Minimising insect bites (especially from mosquitos) and check for bites regularly.
- Avoid known tick-infested areas.
- Avoid contact with blood and body fluids.
- Practice safe sex.
- Follow good food, water and personal hygiene practices.
- Avoid contact with freshwater rivers and lakes in risk areas whenever possible.
