Flu Tests

Common symptoms of the flu include a sudden onset of fever, cough (usually dry), headache, muscle and joint pain and a runny or stuffy nose.

There are various rapid test kits required to confirm influenza diagnosis before dispensing medications. If a patient has reason to believe they have contracted the influenza virus, there are various primary point-of-care testing methods to choose from when visiting your local pharmacy. The most common self-test at home examples include:

  • Rapid Influenza Diagnostic Tests which are a rapid self-test to check if you have 2 strains of the flu to help you manage your symptoms quickly. The test is intended to be used as a screening test and provides an aid in the diagnosis of acute influenza type A and B viral infections. Results can be obtained in minutes. Some tests can even test more than 1 thing at the same time e.g. Covid 19 and Flu together.

An increasing number of pharmacies are now offering a flu test 'n' treat service. Pharmacies can help patients who are either concerned that they may have contracted influenza or wish to enhance their protection alongside vaccination by running this test 'n' treat service. Trained pharmacists can confirm a patient's influenza diagnosis using a rapid test kit, then prescribe appropriate treatment depending on the test result.
