Encouraging the UK population to do more physical activity is high on the Department of Health’s agenda. The levels of obesity and the number of people who are being diagnosed with obesity related diseases e.g. heart disease and type 2 diabetes are rising.
Regular exercise can reduce the risk of premature death by 20-30 per cent as well as provide other health benefits including:
- Lower the risk of developing heart disease or stroke.
- Reduce cholesterol.
- Lower blood pressure.
- Prevent the development of or improve the control of type 2 diabetes.
- Weight management.
- Prevent bone and joint problems.
- Improve mental wellbeing.
- Maintain mobility and independence as a person ages.
- Encourages healthy growth and development in children.
Objectives
This counter excellence will cover the following areas:-
- To understand how to get the best out of the body before, during and after exercise through balanced nutrition and hydration.
- To recognise the symptoms and causes of the most common sports injuries.
- To be able to provide customers with self help tips to manage their symptoms.
- To be aware of symptoms which require referral.
