What is Child Abuse?

Child abuse is when a child is harmed by an adult or another child. It can be over a period of time or a one-off action. It can be physical, sexual or emotional and can happen in person or online. It can also be a lack of love, care or attention which is known as neglect.

Child abuse can have negative effects on the child's health, relationships, and education. Children may have mental health problems, drug or alcohol issues, and be more prone to criminal behaviour as a consequence of being abused.

Adults that were abused as children may find it hard to cope with life’s stresses, get a good job, or be a good parent.

There are lots of different types of abuse, and children may experience multiple types.
