Sexual abuse includes rape, sexual assault, sexual acts which the adult has not or cannot consent to or where pressure is applied to secure consent. This form of abuse can also include the adult being forced to witness sexual acts or observe pornographic images. Jokes or comments of a sexual nature that make the adult feel threatened or embarrassed can also be considered to be sexual abuse.

Sexual abuse can manifest as both physical and behavioural signs including:

  • Sexually transmitted infections
  • Pregnancy or repeat requests for emergency hormonal contraception
  • Genital bleeding or itching
  • Self-harming
  • Being withdrawn
