Now that you are set up and ready to go with your health promotion, you need to think about how you will identify your customers and then start off the topic of conversation. The whole idea of a health promotion is to start the conversation as oppose to delivering the whole message.  Below are some suggested tips to get started:

  • Do your research! Think about who your target audience are, for example does age, ethnicity or gender play a part in the promotion? Are certain people at high risk?
  • Are there additional training requirements / screening services the pharmacy team need to be aware of?
  • For your patients €“ is there an opportunity to link health promotion activity and advice to their prescription?
  • When starting off the topic of conversation here are a few examples which you can adapt to suit the message:-
    • Do you mind if I ask you what you thought about this poster?
    • Hi, we are talking to our customers today about health topic do you mind if I spend a few minutes discussing this with you?
    • As part of my role, I am looking to encourage conversations around health topic, would you know somebody who may be interested in this?
  • Practice role playing with other staff members to build up your confidence with your conversations
