Prediabetes, sometimes called borderline diabetes, is another risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes refers to when patients have higher than normal blood glucose levels but not high enough to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Patients may not experience symtoms when they are prediabetic and it is diagnosed in the same way as type 2 diabetes.
Patients can react in different ways when they are diagnosed with prediabetes. Some take it as an inevitability that they will get diabetes but others view it as a wake up call. Community pharmacy is in the perfect place to support the second group with advice and guidance to prevent them developing type 2 diabetes.
This case study from Diabetes UK describes one person's story of being diagnosed with prediabetes and how they made appropriate changes to prevent becoming a type 2 diabetic.
