Manual Handling Aids
The presence of a handling aid does not solve all manual handling risks as the appropriate care and attention is still required to ensure the device is used correctly.
If using a handling aid such as a trolley, it should have a handle height that is between the shoulder and the waist. Devices should be well maintained with wheels that run smoothly, should you have concerns that the equipment is damaged and not working effectively it is important, and your responsibility, to make your manager aware.
Where possible try to push rather than pull a load, provided that it can be seen over and steering or stopping can be controlled. Keep feet well away from the load and go no faster than walking speed.
If there is a slope or ramp to navigate, always get help from another employee as the force required can be a lot greater. Likewise moving an object over soft or uneven surfaces may also require help as greater force is required.
