Structure of the Skin

The skin has many important functions. It is a strong, physical barrier helping to protect the body from irritation and infection. It also helps to regulate the body’s temperature. The skin is made up of three important layers containing skin cells, fats and oils, all of which help maintain and protect the skin as shown below.
