Fire Prevention

Understand the dangers

Most fire deaths occur because of inhalation of toxic gas, rather than contact with flames. Many of these deaths could be prevented by taking a few simple precautions.

General Fire Prevention Tips

  • Practice good housekeeping, keep work areas clean and tidy and not allowing a build-up of combustible materials e.g., cardboard and paper.
  • Flammable medications should be stored separately.
  • Staff receive COSHH training.
  • Do not plug too many appliances into an electrical outlet.
  • Make sure that combustibles are not too close to electrical appliances especially those that give off heat.
  • Never smoke inside any building.
  • Do not use damaged or frayed electrical cords or extension cords.
  • Never use extension cords with heating or air conditioning equipment.
  • Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children.
  • Purchase smoke alarms and fire extinguishers for each floor.
  • Have an Emergency Escape Plan and practice it frequently.
  • Ensure that you have tools available if windows must be broken or window guards removed.
  • If you work in a two-story building, you should have an escape route e.g.fire exits and stairwells for each floor.

Remember the earlier a fire is detected, the less risk there is to your life. So please remember your prevention tips. Ensure fire alarms are working (and tested regularly). Also remember smoke detectors play a very important role in this preventative process!
