GDPR is key legislation in the UK designed to protect personal data stored about people. Confidentiality is especially important in the pharmacy environment and it is your responsibility to comply with this act ensuring you keep all customer details safe and secure. Ensure you are diligent during the delivery process to keep any written or electronic patient information that you have for a customer secure and out of sight; it may be a record, a prescription or a prescription bag label.

Be mindful of who can hear you when discussing a customer, be it when you are carrying out deliveries or back at the pharmacy talking to the team about a customer. The same rule applies to when you are back at home; refrain from discussing anything about a customer with your friends and family even if you don’t think they know them.

If a customer has requested a delivery to a relative or a neighbour and they query what the medication is you may feel it is acceptable to tell them as the nominated person, however you must not do this.

There may be occasions where a customer provides a key code to enable you to access their accommodation to make the delivery, ensure this information is kept very secure and is only detailed on official pharmacy documentation that is destroyed or locked away after the delivery. You must not share this information with any other individual.

As part of your role it is advisable to complete our full module on GDPR which can be found here.
