Sore throats are common in the winter and usually resolve by itself in a week.

OTC remedies such as paracetamol, ibuprofen can help to ease the symptoms.

Self-help tips you could advise:

  • Gargle with warm, salty water (not for children)
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Eat cool or soft foods
  • Suck ice cubes, ice lollies or hard boiled sweets – not suitable for children
  • Rest
  • Avoid smoking
