STIs are on the rise in the UK, particularly in the under 25’s - are you able to tell someone has an STI by just looking at them? No and it’s terrifying that many people don’t experience any symptoms with an STI, and worst case, if left untreated, it can develop a number of issues, so it’s absolutely essential to get a check up.
The topic of STIs will be a highly sensitive and embarrassing situation for most, paired with the reluctance to talk about it will result in people not seeking advice. So how could you support your customers? Being courteous, understanding and listening are key attributes, but being able to promote safe sex will get people talking and help normalise the topic of STI’s and provide a window of opportunity to signpost to sexual health services offered within pharmacy.
