module menu icon Meningitis and those at risk

Meningitis is the inflammation of the 3 layers of membranes known as meninges that protect the brain and spinal cord.

1. The delicate inner layer is the pia mater.

2. The middle layer is the arachnoid, a web-like structure filled with fluid that cushions the brain.

3. The tough outer layer is called the dura mater.

Anyone can be affected by meningitis, but certain factors may increase risk.

  • Certain age  groups (0-5, 15-24 and over 65)

  • Weakened immune system

  • Mass gatherings

  • Living environment

  • Exposure to passive smoking

Meningitis and septicaemia (blood poisoning) often happen together as some of the bacteria that cause meningitis can also cause septicaemia - so it’s important to be aware of all the signs and symptoms.
