As we know, hair loss affects half of men over the age of 50 and whilst there is no cure, there are some things that may help to slow down the process. Some men accept that they are naturally losing their hair and will leave it untreated. But for others, coming to terms with this change can have a huge impact on mental health which will affect confidence, self-esteem and even relationships and careers. This proportion of men will be seeking treatment to prevent any further hair loss.

Losing hair can be distressing, especially if it is excessive or happens early in life. You could use the following hair routine and lifestyle advice to support your customers to minimise the appearance of their hair loss:

  • Protect the scalp from sunlight – to prevent any sunburn or to reduce the change of sun damage, cover any bald patches using sun block, a wig or a hat. Avoid wearing tight fitting hats or caps.
  • Care for the hair you already have. Some people can be quite rough with hair, especially if they are heavy handed. An idea would be to switch from a brush to a comb. Wet hair can be more fragile so handle it with care.
  • Find a style that suits you – speak to your barber who may be able to suggest a different style to hide the bald patches and will make you feel and look better.
  • Some shampoos can also make your hair appear thicker and fuller – it maybe an idea to seek advice from your barber.
  • Hair loss can sometimes start when people give up meat. Try to include a sufficient amount of protein into your diet, especially if you follow a vegan or vegetarian diet such as eating fish, beans and low fat dairy products. Refer to the Eatwell guide whilst having your discussions.
  • Try and include plenty of iron rich foods such as liver, eggs and green vegetables.
