There are certain travellers that are at an increased risk of developing complications if they are diagnosed with malaria which includes:
- Pregnant women
- Babies and children under the age of five
- Elderly people
- People with suppressed immunity e.g. HIV or AIDS.
Migrants who were born in malaria risk areas and then return to visit friends and relatives may be at a higher risk as they believe they are immune to malaria and won’t seek travel advice before travelling.
