Babies need winding during or following a feed, whether that is breast milk or formula, to release any excess air in their stomach that they have swallowed during feeding. Excess wind can make a baby very uncomfortable and means they may not settle after a feed. Not all babies suffer from this problem and it is more common in bottle fed babies.
Babies often need winding halfway through a feed and when a feed has finished.
You can either sit the baby upright on the lap supporting them under the chin or lay them over the shoulder. You will then need to rub or pat their back to stimulate the release of air. The process should be continued until the air is release by burping. Occasionally the baby may also bring up a little milk so it is useful to have a cloth handy.
