module menu icon Prevalence and burden of the flu

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the flu epidemic is estimated to result in about 3 to 5 million cases of severe illness and  290,000 to 650,000 respiratory deaths each year1. The estimations for 2019/20 will be skewed though because of the current COVID-19 pandemic so it will be harder to paint a picture of the Flu epidemic and if there has been a reduction in total deaths.

The International Longevity Centre UK (ILC), the savings made in the UK from premature death which could have been prevented from  vaccinations ranged from £90 million to £270 million2, so we still need to play a big part in being proactive and driving uptake during the flu season.
