Bruising occurs when the blood clots and is usually caused by a bump, knock or a fall. They usually feel tender and painful and will appear reddish/blueish in colour. Pain usually lasts up to two days but if it’s any longer, customers will often enquire how you can help.

There is no risk of infection for bruises as the skin is not broken.

Treatment for bruises

  • Most bruises don’t need to be treated but if it’s severe, you should advise your customers to use the RICE approach:

  • Rest – this will help to prevent further injuries and internal bleeding.
  • Ice – placing cold ice/frozen food will reduce any swelling.
  • Compression – a warm compress used for a few days after bruising can speed up the recovery.
  • Elevation – will help to reduce the swelling
  • Painkillers such as paracetamol and ibuprofen can be recommended for the pain.

Important note! If a customer continually experiences unexplained bruising, they should be referred to the pharmacist as there could be an underlying medical condition.
