Having trouble with an erection from time to time, is usually not a cause for concern but when it becomes an ongoing problem, it is referred to as Erectile Dysfunction (ED)
ED is defined by the British Society for Sexual Medication1 as :
“the persistent inability to attain and/or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance”.
You may have heard this as ‘impotence’, which is more common as a person ages, however not a natural part of ageing.
Erectile Dysfunction :
- May occur occasionally or frequently
- Can vary in severity – mild (a soft erection) to severe (no erection at all)
