The coronavirus belongs to a family of viruses which causes illness in animals and humans. Several coronaviruses cause respiratory (breathing) problems in humans that range from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

COVID-19 is an infectious disease which is a new coronavirus that has been introduced to humans for the first time. The outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. It is a respiratory disease which spreads from person to person.  

Interestingly, the name coronavirus was derived from the Latin word called corona meaning “crown” because it’s appearance looks very similar to one.
