module menu icon What is Tooth Decay?

Tooth decay is the most common oral disease posing a serious problem for children and young people, yet it is largely preventable. Tooth decay occurs from the plaque (bacteria) in your mouth which will produce acid and in turn build up on teeth (as pictured).

Tooth decay damages the enamel (visible part of your tooth) and can lead to permanent damage to the tooth (referred to as cavities).

If plaque is left to build up, it can lead to further problems ranging from dental cavities (holes in the tooth) requiring a trip to the dentist for a filling, through to gum disease and dental abscesses.
