Anaphylaxis is a rare, but severe and potentially life threatening allergic reaction that is classed as a medical emergency requiring immediate treatment.
The most common triggers of anaphylaxis are:
- Insect bites, especially wasps and bees
- Food allergies e.g. peanuts or shellfish.
- Certain medications such as antibiotics.
- Vaccinations
Some patients who are at high risk from anaphylaxis will carry adrenaline auto-injections. They will be aware of their triggers to prevent this occuring but sometimes they are unavoidable.
