module menu icon Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is a rare, but severe and potentially life threatening allergic reaction that is classed as a medical emergency requiring immediate treatment.

The most common triggers of anaphylaxis are:

  • Insect bites, especially wasps and bees
  • Food allergies e.g. peanuts or shellfish.
  • Certain medications such as antibiotics.
  • Vaccinations

Some patients who are at high risk from anaphylaxis will carry adrenaline auto-injections. They will be aware of their triggers to prevent this occuring but sometimes they are unavoidable.
