The NHS offer patients with mental health issues two forms of treatment, talking treatments and medication.

The NHS choices website can provide further information about the treatments and services available in your local area.

Talking treatment

Talking treatment provides a regular time and space for patients to talk about their thoughts and experiences with a trained professional. This type of treatment can also be referred to as counselling, psychotherapy, therapy, or psychological therapy.

Medication

The most common type of treatment available is prescription medication. This does not cure the mental health problem, but helps to reduce or ease the symptoms. There are 4 main types of medication that are prescribed:-

  • Antidepressants
  • Minor tranquillisers or sleeping pills
  • Mood Stabilisers
  • Anti-psychotics
