Sunburn is a response of the skin from over-exposure to ultraviolet radiation (from the sun).
All patients can be at risk of being sun-burnt, even those with darker skin colours and higher levels of melanin. Most people are aware of the need to apply suncream to protect themselves against sunburn however if it does occur, you can offer advice on how to treat it.
Usually the symptoms of sunburn will only last a couple of days but in that time patients may experience red, warm, sore and tender skin. After a few days these symptoms may reduce and the skin may then start to peel. Usually after 7 days sunburn will fully heal, but it's important to reiterate the increased risk of developing skin problems later in life such as wrinkles and skin cancer.
