module menu icon Treating Sore Throats

Sore throats will often go away on their own and mild infections will often require no treatment.

You could recommend self care to help the patient relieve their symptoms including:-

  • Keeping hydrated - drinking fluids, even if its painful to do so will help to relieve symptoms such as headaches and tiredness and prevent dehydration.
  • Take painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen
  • Use lozenges or throat sprays to help to soothe and numb the throat

GP's will now no longer prescribe antibiotics for mild sore throats so you should be prepared to offer the above advice to help relieve symptoms patients experience.
