Most smokers will struggle to quit without any support and NRT has been shown to have a positive impact on an individuals success rate.

NRT contains nicotine which helps to prevent cravings and reduce the urge to smoke. There are many different forms available.

You can also offer patients some self-care tips to help them stop smoking:-

  • On the first day of quitting, start the morning without a cigarette
  • Talk a walk or read a book instead of a cigarette break
  • Try eating a healthy snack when you get the urge for a cigarette
  • Tell others about stopping smoking and share your successes with them
  • Get rid of any reminders of smoking, such as lighters
  • Drink plenty of fluids, but avoid caffeine and alcohol
