You need to be aware of the following red flag symptoms. If a patient presents with any of the below they should be referred to the pharmacist:- 

  • If there is evidence of an infection (warmth, redness, weeping, crusting or spreading of the rash)
  • Concurrent cold sore or contact with an infected person
  • Severe symptoms such as bleeding, severe cracks/fissures
  • No relief from any medication
  • No identifiable cause of the rash
  • Symptoms lasting for more the 2 weeks
