You need to be aware of the following red flag symptoms. If a patient presents with any of the below they should be referred to the pharmacist:- 

  • If their cough has lasted more than 3 weeks
  • If the cough quickly gets worse and they can't stop
  • If they have any chest pain
  • If the patient has lost weight rapidly
  • If the side of the neck feels swollen and painful
  • If the patient is finding it hard to breathe or wheezing
  • If the patient has a weakened immune system
  • If the patient is coughing up blood or discoloured phlegm
