You need to be aware of the following red flag symptoms. If a patient presents with any of the below they should be referred to the pharmacist:-

- If their cough has lasted more than 3 weeks
- If the cough quickly gets worse and they can't stop
- If they have any chest pain
- If the patient has lost weight rapidly
- If the side of the neck feels swollen and painful
- If the patient is finding it hard to breathe or wheezing
- If the patient has a weakened immune system
- If the patient is coughing up blood or discoloured phlegm
