There are a number of treatment options for mild to moderate acne. For more severe cases of acne patients should be referred to their GP, such as those affecting the back or chest.
Some self care tips you can give to patients include:-
- Wash the affected area with a mild soap and lukewarm water, but no more than twice a day
- Avoid squeezing any spots as this can cause scarring
- Avoid using too much make-up and try to used water-based products if possible i.e non-comedogenic products
- Remove any makeup before going to sleep
- Avoid letting hair fall onto the face
- Eating a healthy diet
Topical treatments containing benzoyl peroxide or nicotinamide can also help to relieve symptoms of mild acne.
Patients should be advised treatment can take time to work and may irritate the skins at the start of treatment.
