Wet Combing

This is the systematic combing of wet hair with a louse detection comb to remove head lice.

NHS Scotland advises the following steps for wet combing:

Wet combing should be completed on days 1, 5, 9 and 13 after discovering lice and a check should be done on day 17 to make sure the hair is lice free.

Advantages:

  • Inexpensive, kits can be reused

  • No contraindications or precautions for use

Disadvantages:

  • Time consuming and labour intensive

  • Ineffective if an unsuitable comb or incorrect method is used
