This module explains which symptoms are regarded as a medical emergency and how they are managed, as well as the importance of early detection of chronic cases.
Reducing the pressure inside the eye is the main aim of glaucoma management, as this slows disease progression and decreases the risk of vision loss, which is irreversible if it occurs.
This module is intended as a companion to the First Prescription CPD module on glaucoma.
Key facts
- The term glaucoma refers to a group of eye diseases where damage to the optic nerve causes problems with eyesight
- Primary chronic open angle glaucoma (COAG) is the most common form of the condition and there is a strong link to increasing age. It is often so gradual in onset that it appears asymptomatic and is frequently only detected at routine eye tests
- Topical treatments and laser surgery form the mainstay of treatment, but early diagnosis is key in all cases to try and prevent progression of the condition.
